HISTORY

The community of Foster, Ohio got its start, thanks to James Foster venturing north on the Cincinnati Montgomery Hopkinsville Turnpike in 1841. He settled along the east side of the Little Miami River and built a store, as well as a hotel. The village was originally known as Foster’s Crossing due to James providing a river crossing service to settlers. Thanks to the completion of the Little Miami Railroad, Foster became the perfect spot for a weekend getaway. Cincinnatians would travel twenty-two miles north, along the railroad, and stay at the Foster’s Hotel for the weekend. On February 13, 1861, the Presidential train of Abraham Lincoln even made a stop in Foster on his way from Cincinnati to Columbus on his inaugural tour.

By 1868, the population of Foster had grown to 180. There were 47 buildings, of which there were 21 homes, 5 saloons, and the remaining buildings consisted of a variety of stores, mills, a blacksmith, a distillery (the white house), a post office, and a telegraph office.

Foster’s popularity continued into the 20th century with fun summer activities, such as Hoppe’s Island, camping, and canoeing.

In 1987, Foster hit international news with the Sam the Chimp trial. You can learn more about the history of Foster, Sam the Chimp, and The Monkey Bar & Grille building itself by clicking one of the links below.
